Description
305-311 West George Street in Glasgow is a corner range of classical terraced and flatted houses built around 1825-1830. The building has three storeys and a basement, rising to the south on a slope, with a total of 12 x 13 bays. The second and third bays from the east on West George Street are blind.
The exterior features polished ashlar with channelled detailing, and voussoirs at the ground floor. The rear and side elevations are finished in stugged ashlar, while the northern return displays droved ashlar, some plate glass, and 12-pane glazing.
Notable architectural elements include semi-engaged Doric doorpieces at No 109 Douglas Street and No 239 West George Street. The doorpieces at Nos 105 and 107 Douglas Street, as well as Nos 305, 307, and 309 West George Street, are consoled and corniced with architraves, accommodating double, single, and triple entries respectively. The entries are located at the heads of steps, with the basement oversailing at West George Street.
All windows are sash and case within architraves, primarily featuring 12-pane glazing. The ground floor has an arcade with a cill band and recessed glazing, while the first floor includes a cill band, moulded cills, and cornices. The third floor is plain, topped with an eaves cornice and a blocking course. The building has corniced ridge stacks and corniced wallhead stacks along West George Street, with the westmost end stack. The roof is covered with slate.
