Description
24 Blythswood Square in Glasgow is a classical terrace block built around 1823, featuring three stories and a basement. The building has 22 bays, with five-bay pavilions that project forward, and the central bays arranged in a pattern of three, three, three, and three. The exterior is finished in ashlar stone, with a channelled design at the ground floor. The outer bays have distyle Ionic porticos, although the one at No 21 has been altered. There are pilastered porticos with Ionic columns in antis at No 177 West Regent Street, and a pilastered, pedimented doorpiece at No 268 West George Street.
The windows are primarily sash and case, with some featuring 12-pane glazing, and are architraved on the first and second floors. The ground floor windows are set in round-headed panels with moulded cills and plain aprons above the basement band. There is a band course on the first floor, with aprons in the outer bays; the windows are corniced and consoled at the end sections, while the architraves in the central bays are simplified. The building has an eaves cornice and a blocking cornice.
On the west side, there is a five-bay return to West George Street, with the first bay from the east being blind. The basement rises with the slope of the hill and features similar window treatments, including additional smaller lights to the right of the entry at the ground and first floor. There are two reduced corniced wallhead stacks.
The west side has a four-bay arrangement to West Regent Street, configured as one, two, one, with similar window detailing. The building also has a later dormered attic. Notably, Nos 26 and 26A retain interesting original plasterwork with unusual designs.
