Description
St George's Church, located on George Street in Dumfries, was designed by J Halliday of Dumfries and built between 1892 and 1893, following a refronting and remodelling of the original Free Church from 1843-1844. The church features an Italian Renaissance style with late Georgian elements. To the northeast, there is a church officer's flat above an off-centre wide pend. The building is constructed of red ashlar stone, with a rusticated base and slate roofs.
The church has five bays that are defined by engaged square Doric columns on rusticated piers, topped with urn finials over the parapet. It includes tall windows with stilted round arches and round-arched lights. To the left, there is a wide doorway with modern doors and a fanlight. The structure is finished with a dentilled cornice. On the southwest flank, a full-height advanced bay accommodates the pulpit, with a low vestry adjoining it that has a door to the street.
Inside, which was also designed by Halliday, two tiers of Corinthian columns support the gallery and roof. The pulpit recess is pilastered and has a columned round-arched design, featuring a modern pulpit. The interior includes a modillion cornice and a coffered ceiling, with the gallery extending around three sides.
The church officer's flat, accessible through a door in the pend, has two first-floor windows with sashes and a 12-pane glazing pattern, along with band courses, a cornice, and a mullioned dormer.
