Description
R F and J Alexander's Cotton Spinning Mill, located at 100 Duke Street in Glasgow, was designed by Charles Wilson in 1848. Originally built as a cotton spinning mill, it was later converted into a hotel for working men, opening in 1909, and featured a 200-foot long roller skating rink with a maple floor, designed by architect Neil C Duff. The original building showcases a plain Italian Renaissance style and is constructed with fireproof materials, including jack-arches, brick on the lower floors, and concrete on corrugated arched plates for the upper floors.
The mill is a massive symmetrical block with six storeys above a sunken basement, plus an additional attic storey designed by Duff above the main cornice. The front façade is also massive and symmetrical, featuring shallow advanced three-bay ends, with a neo-baroque doorcase at the centre. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar with rusticated quoins and dressings, primarily featuring basket-arched openings on the ground floor, while the decoration above the ground floor is minimal. The roof is concealed from view from the street.
