Description
The Salvation Army Citadel, located at 36-40 Golspie Street in Glasgow, was designed by John Hamilton and completed in 1903, with a sympathetic enlargement of the Junior Hall in 1906. This single-storey building features a gallery and has a rectangular plan with seven bays, showcasing free Renaissance architectural details. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings on the east and south sides, while the north side has red brick and red painted harl where it previously adjoined other properties. The building includes some mullioned and transomed windows, pedimented entrance doorways—some adorned with stylised keystone details—a short square tower, and inscribed ashlar panels on the east side.
On the principal elevation to the east, there is a three-bay gable that houses the 'Large Hall.' This features a central principal entrance that is slightly advanced and topped with an open pediment displaying the Salvation Army Crest along with the motto 'BLOOD AND FIRE.' Above this entrance, the lettering 'THE SALVATION ARMY.1903.' is positioned, flanked by a pair of four-light mullioned and transomed windows. To the right, there is a short square tower with a central pedimented doorway that has an elongated keystone. Further to the right is a slightly recessed three-bay section that contains the 'Junior Hall,' featuring a slightly advanced gable on the outer bay with another pedimented doorway and elongated keystone.
The south elevation is dominated by a triple arrangement of four-light mullioned and transomed windows. The west elevation is obscured by a modern shallow two-storey red brick extension. The north elevation is nearly blank, finished with red painted harl. The building has replacement glazing, modern roof tiles, and metal shuttered doors. The interior was not seen in 2004.
