Description
Elie Primary School, built in the third quarter of the 19th century, is designed in a neo-Jacobean style. The building is single storey with an attic and features coursers with broached ashlar dressings and filleted mullions. The north elevation is nearly symmetrical, consisting of 9 bays with shaped curvilinear gables. The larger, central gable is advanced and includes a door, a window, and an arched attic light. The central openings are two-light over a transom, while the others are mullioned and transomed three-light windows, with long-and-short surrounds to the left of the central gable and timber framing to the right.
The curvilinear east gable features two mullioned and transomed three-light windows and two arched attic lights with hoodmoulds above, flanked by cross motifs. The west gable has a tall chimney breast and a stepped string course. The roof is slated. The south elevation is harled at the east end and includes the original projecting central gable, which is made of rubble and has a bipartite window on the first floor with stepped coping. There are also modern wings added to the east and west.
