Description

Strathairly House is a mid-to-late 18th century house that was substantially refronted around 1830 in a neoclassical style, with two additional bays added to balance the facade at the same time. The main front is built of ashlar stone, and the house has two storeys over a basement, arranged in five bays. The central bay is advanced and features a pediment, with a front door at the head of a flight of steps. The door is framed by an Ionic screen porch and is complemented by a good panelled fanlight and side lights with margin panes. Ground floor windows are set within lugged architraves and contain 12-pane glazing. The building includes an entablature and blocking course, symmetrical corniced stacks, and a piended slate roof. The side and rear elevations are harled. A two-storey canted bay was added to the west elevation of the main block in the early 20th century, and flat-roofed rear additions were likely added around the same time. The rear elevation features a semicircular stair tower, dating back to the original 18th century house, and some altered window openings. The neoclassical refronting may have been undertaken by Robert Balfour.
