Description
Law Mill, dated 1757, is a predominantly roofless former mill located on a sloping site. It features a kiln with a distinctive pyramid roof, forming a T-plan, and is accompanied by a late 19th century cottage. The mill is constructed from sandstone rubble with some ashlar margins, while the cottage is made of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar margins and has a single story with an attic.
The east elevation of Law Mill is partly ruinous, with a near-central section of the wall missing, which likely once contained cart arches. There is a segmental arched entrance with a dated keystone to the right and a loft opening at eaves level on the far right. Fragmentary remains of additional buildings can be found to the south. The north elevation has a wheel-pit that includes a cast-iron outer frame of the wheel and some remnants of the mechanism inside. A square-plan kiln with a pantiled pyramid roof projects from the west elevation.
The cottage faces the mill building and has a symmetrical design, featuring a low harled piended single bay to the left. The central entrance consists of a two-leaf door with a simple glazed rectangular fanlight above, flanked by windows in the adjacent bays. The rear elevation is also symmetrical, with three bays and a pair of flat-roofed bipartite dormers in the attic, along with a further recessed bay to the right.
The cottage predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a graded grey slate roof, and ashlar gable end stacks with cans. The skews are ashlar-coped, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
