Description

Century House, formerly known as Newmill, is a large, asymmetrical two-storey and attic Arts and Crafts villa built in 1908 by architects Gillespie & Scott. It is discreetly located along Hepburn Gardens and features a distinctive circular-plan three-stage tower, a turret with a candlesnuffer roof, and crowstepped gables. The exterior is finished in harl with stone cills.

On the southeast garden elevation, the near-central three-stage tower has a pedimented moulded doorpiece that includes a decoratively part-glazed timber door. The tower is capped with a corbel course and a parapet. Adjoining the tower is a two-stage turret with a timber door providing access to the tower parapet. To the left, there is a recessed single bay with a first-floor window that breaks the eaves. To the right, a symmetrical two-bay projecting wing features crowstepped gables and an apex stack.

The northwest elevation facing Hepburn Gardens includes a central three-light stair window with stone mullions and transoms, along with a small box dormer above. To the right, there is a crowstepped gabled bay with a flat-roofed buttressed entrance porch that has a nine-panel timber door. To the left, a projecting single-storey gabled bay is present.

The villa predominantly features plate glass timber sash and case windows with horns and is roofed with graded grey slates. It has a variety of tall ridge and gable stacks with cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, Century House boasts a fine interior with many original features, including timber panelling and fireplaces in some ground floor rooms. The principal rooms are adorned with fine moulded cornices. A notable feature is a three-light multi-pane stained glass curved window flanked by Doric columns, which separates the hall from the vestibule. The central hall is also supported by Doric columns and pilasters, with a dogleg staircase leading to the first floor and a boarded timber stairwell leading to the turret.
