Description

Wayside, located at 96 Hepburn Gardens in St Andrews, is a large, asymmetrical 2-storey and attic Arts and Crafts villa designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and dated 1902. The building has a distinctive roofscape featuring gabled, piended, and cat-slide roofs. It is currently divided into two properties and is constructed from squared and coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar margins at the main entrance. The villa showcases timber mullions, hung slate detailing, casement windows, and overhanging eaves.

On the northwest entrance elevation facing Hepburn Gardens, there is a near-central recessed bay that includes a tripartite stained glass window and a timber door in the re-entrant angle. To the left, there are two tall gabled bays, while the far left features a flat-roofed bay that connects to a square plan garage topped with a pyramid roof. To the right, a projecting piended bay contains a tall window on the first floor. The far right has a slightly recessed bay with a central tripartite window at the ground floor and a cusped 2-light dormer in the attic.

The southeast elevation, which faces the garden, has a 2-storey and attic gable that is off-centre to the right. The far right section is recessed and features a central wallhead stack flanked by tripartite windows on the first floor. To the left, there is a low cat-slide roof with a cusped dormer and a tripartite window at ground level. The far left contains a recessed bay with a double-height multi-pane hall window that includes curved glass, and to the extreme left, there is another recessed section with a wallhead stack. The west elevation has advanced bay windows on the first and second storeys, both with piended roofs.

The villa predominantly features multi-pane timber casement windows with timber mullions and is roofed with graded mixed grey slates sourced from Easdale, Graiglea, and Ballachulish quarries. It also has tall wallhead stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The boundary walls and gatepiers on the northwest side consist of a tall squared sandstone rubble section with semicircular coping. To the right, there is a pedestrian entrance marked by tall narrow square plan ashlar gatepiers with a cast-iron gate, while to the left, a vehicle entrance is flanked by recessed gatepiers.
