Description

52 Hepburn Gardens is a two-storey double villa built in 1911 by Haxton & Walker, showcasing a symmetrical Arts and Crafts style. The building features a distinctive four-bay M-gabled street elevation that slopes steeply down to integral open porches at the outer bays, supported by unusual squat columns. The exterior is finished with whitewashed harl and has overhanging eaves.

On the northern street elevation, there are canted bay windows on the ground floor and tripartite windows above, partially set within the gables, with slit openings above. The integral open porches have four squat columns in the upper part and are harled in the lower part. The entrance door is deeply recessed, featuring multiple panels with a small pair of leaded glass panels and an 8-light rectangular fanlight above.

At the rear, there is a central projecting lower piend-roofed scullery and wash-house wing. The property at No 52 has been altered to include patio doors.

The windows are timber sash and case, primarily with 9-pane or 4-pane designs over plate glass. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are whitewashed harl ridge stacks along with cast iron rainwater goods.

The interior of No 52 has not been seen, but it is noted to have a good interior scheme that includes a fine stained glass window, a single segmental consoled and corniced arch, and four-panel timber doors leading to the hall. The staircases feature simple geometric timber balustrades and handrails, and there is some fine joinery work on the chimneypiece and an integrated cabinet in the front ground floor room.

The boundary walls consist of a low squared and snecked sandstone wall along Hepburn Gardens, topped with gabled coping.
