Description
Liscombe and Holly Lodge, including boundary walls, are a late 19th-century villa and service wing, dated 1894, designed by Thomas Martin Cappon and situated along Kennedy Gardens. The main villa is two storeys and an attic, with three bays, while the single-storey and attic service wing is located to the left. In 2007, the property was subdivided into two separate dwellings.
The villa presents a symmetrical design on its north, street-facing elevation. It features a pair of three-light box bay windows beneath a near full-width overhanging slated canopy on the ground floor. The first floor has a window in the central bay, flanked by blank stone panels shaped as pediments. The attic is capped by a large, distinctive ogee-roofed dormer with an ornamental weathervane, accompanied by a pair of smaller, piend-roofed bipartite dormers. To the left is a recessed three-bay service wing with a pitched roof, and a slightly advanced bay with a piended roof displaying a bipartite stair window and timber gabled eaves, dated 1894.
The west, entrance-facing elevation is also three bays and features a detailed timber and glass, slate-roofed porch with a deeply moulded cornice and carved timber uprights. There is distinctive glazing in the upper areas. The main entrance is located on the left return. A non-traditional conservatory has been added to the south elevation of the service wing.
Windows are timber sash and case, with the upper sashes featuring a patterned central diamond and four-pane surround. The lower sashes are plate glass. The roof is covered with graded grey slates and includes wallhead stacks with decorative cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior retains a notable decorative scheme, showcasing quality stained glass and joinery. A timber, multi-pane glazed screen with stained glass separates the vestibule from the hall, the vestibule and porch having mosaic flooring. Decorative cornicing is also present. There are several timber chimneypieces with tiled inserts. The hall contains decorated segmental arches, consoled cornices, and fine architraved five-panel doors. A dogleg staircase features carved timber balusters and a four-pane, foliate stained glass stair window.
A low, coped sandstone boundary wall runs along the north side of the property.
