Description
4 Hepburn Gardens is a cottage dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is a single storey and attic building with three bays, featuring a fine classical buffet niche that has been formed from a box bed. The street-facing (north) elevation is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone rubble, while the other elevations are made of rubble with ashlar margins.
The principal (north) elevation has a central door that is obscured by a later flat-roofed timber porch, which has an entrance in the re-entrant angle. There are window bays on either side of the door. Above the porch is a small box dormer, and to the right is a further gabled dormer. The rear (south) elevation includes a large four-light French window to the left.
The cottage predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows and has a pantiled roof. The gable ends have ashlar stacks with cans and ashlar-coped skews. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.
Inside, there is fine timberwork in a classical style, possibly from the 18th century. The former box bed has been reused to create the buffet niche, which includes a depressed segmental arch with fluted mouldings and a keystone, flanked by fluted pilasters with foliate capitals, and topped with a carved cornice. To the left of the niche is a panelled cupboard, and to the right is a six-panel timber door.
