Description

Rathmore and Little Rathmore, located in Kennedy Gardens, St Andrews, is a large multi-gabled villa built in 1861 by John Milne, with alterations made by Charles Stewart Still Johnston in 1906 and Walker & Pride between 1934 and 1939. The building is two stories high with an attic and features a prominent four-stage central tower with unique Gothic detailing. It is now divided into flats as of 2007. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar margins, and includes a base course, cill course, and overhanging eaves adorned with decorative timber bargeboards.

On the north elevation facing the street, there is a segmental arched entrance with a shallow stone canopy that forms the base of the tower. The square-plan tower has a later saddleback-roofed upper storey. To the right, there is a two-storey advanced four-light canted bay with a gabled attic storey, while to the left is a recessed gabled single bay. Further to the left is a lower recessed wing with a central gable.

The windows are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with graded grey slates. The building features large gable stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, as seen in 2006, the villa has been altered to create five flats. The principal room on the ground floor retains full height timber panelling, a simple stone chimneypiece, and a decorative Jacobethan strapwork plaster ceiling.

The boundary walls include a low coped stone section to the northwest.
