Description
Abbotsinch and Fulwood House is a two-storey and attic villa, constructed in 1907 by J Donald Mills and Godfrey D B Shepherd, with extensions added in 1913. It is built in an irregular plan, reflecting the Arts and Crafts style. The exterior is mainly harled brick with a Caithness stone slate roof, terracotta ridge tiles, and projecting stacks topped with terracotta cans. Deep eaves and shouldered gables are a prominent feature. The windows are timber casements, many multi-pane, with some single opening, and include single, bipartite and tripartite configurations.
The west elevation features a bay to the left and a re-entrant porch with a stone-slated canopy and a plain timber pier, with an iron handrail to the right. A flat-roofed dormer sits centrally. To the right is a slightly advanced gable with a chimneybreast and a window, accompanied by a projecting brick garden wall.
The south elevation has a four-bay main section, including a porch with a swept roof supporting an ashlar pier and a tripartite window. Further features include dormers at both the first floor and attic levels. An advanced gable on the right incorporates tripartite windows at ground and first floor levels, with additional windows on its returns. A recessed wing to the far right has a round-headed tripartite window at ground level and a flat-roofed dormer. A three-bay recessed service wing is present on the right, with later, compatible projections and a dormer.
The east gable displays a chimneybreast and windows on both the ground and first floors. The north elevation shows the main house to the right, with a stair window piercing the eaves. Dormers are located in the attic space, and a projecting wing extends to the right. A later wing, built in 1913, mirrors the architectural style and includes a window at the gable.
Inside, the central living room/hall boasts panelling and a staircase. Original Arts and Crafts style window furniture and fireplaces, as well as some coombed ceilings, remain.
Gatepiers and boundary walls define the north side of Hepburn Gardens. To the right, a lower harled wall curves inwards to form integrated, pyramidal-capped gatepiers. To the left, a higher brick wall with gatepiers is present.
