Description
The Mill of Ribrae consists of a mill and kiln dated 1778, along with a mid-19th century miller's cottage.
The mill is a two-storey structure with an adjoining kiln, forming a three-bay range that is built into a bank. It features coursed rubble construction, with some galletting at the ground level on the west side. The west elevation has a segmental arch at the center on the ground floor, which includes a plaque with the date and initials; "WLB 1778" is located to the right above. There are windows flanking the arch, and three smaller windows on the first floor, with smaller ventilation openings in between.
On the east elevation, the kiln is positioned to the right, with a door at ground level and a window above. The ground is banked up to the first floor of the mill on the left side, where there is a loading door at the first floor that breaks the eaves in a piended dormerhead. Small ventilation openings are located under the eaves. The mill features boarded doors, half windows with pivot shutters, and 4-pane glazing above. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped skews, with a mutual skew dividing the mill and kiln. The kiln has a boarded stack, although the vent is missing. Inside, some hoisting machinery and kiln ovens remain.
The cottage is a single-storey, three-bay T-plan structure made of random rubble with Turriff sandstone dressings. It has a central door with windows flanking it. The windows are sash and case style, featuring a 4-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey-blue slates, which may have been renewed, and there are three skylights. The skews are ashlar coped, angled, and have bracketed skewputts, with corniced stacks that have decorative cans.
