Description

Bendameer Lodge is a picturesque lodge house dating from circa 1875, with an attached outbuilding that originally served as a gig house and stable but has been converted into a garage. The lodge is a single storey with an attic, constructed of stugged ashlar with long and short quoins, tabbed margins, and moulded consoles. Bracketed cills are present on the ground floor windows.

The west-facing (entrance) elevation is gabled and features a finialled, pitch-roofed rustic porch at the centre. Above the porch is a blank moulded tablet; a pointed arch window fills a previously blocked opening. The porch has decorative bargeboarding, rusticated corner posts, and a more recent timber door on its return to the right. To the left of the porch is a small blocked opening, and a pointed arch window is set into the chamfered corner to the outer left.

The north elevation has a window to the left of the centre set within a re-entrant angle, and a projecting gable to the outer left featuring a central window at ground level and a louvred window in the gablehead.

On the south elevation, a slightly advanced, partly blocked opening, likely an altered door, is positioned to the left of the centre. A window is set in a bay to the right, with a wide shoulder-arched opening, acting as a recessed porch, leading to a timber door. A small gable with a window in the gablehead sits to the outer right. Adjacent, the converted gig house projects at a right angle. A window is located in a bay to the outer left, and two slated dormer windows with flat-roofed canopies flank a further small, canopied dormer window, all set to the left of the gablehead.

Most pointed-arch windows have a cast-iron Y-astragalled glazing pattern. Elsewhere, windows are timber sash and case with a 4-pane glazing pattern. The gablehead window on the south elevation has a 4-pane top-opening window. The roof is covered in graded grey slates. The lodge has coped ashlar stacks with clay cans, plain bargeboarding showing kingposts and exposed rafters.

The rectangular-plan, gabled outbuilding (formerly a gig house and stable) adjoins the east elevation of the lodge. At the southeast corner is a part-glazed timber garage door, and a wide segmental-arched opening with two-leaf timber doors connects the building to a flat-coped wall and a further small, flat-roofed outbuilding to the south. The outbuilding’s ridge features kingposts, bargeboarding, and a timber-louvred, pyramidal-roofed air vent. The north elevation’s roofline corresponds to the higher ground.

A rectangular, pitched-roof, finialled conservatory with a harled base and ashlar quoins stands nearby. It has a centre door with pointed-arch lights and a lean-to section to the right.
