Description
This is a late 18th to early 19th century cottage with associated buildings, constructed of rubble with a harl finish, and featuring pantile and slate roofing with ashlar-coped skews.
The north elevation exhibits a recessed central section and irregular, advanced gabled end bays. A gable to the left has a stone forestair leading to a hayloft area, while a lower range to the left contains a doorway and wallhead stack. The gable to the outer right features a blocked opening at forestair level. The south elevation displays a gable to the right with a large opening and door within a screen wall projecting under a catslide roof. A recessed bay to the left contains a paired sliding timber door. An east-facing elevation incorporates a separate byre with a door to the left and a blocked opening to the right.
A small, single-storey farm worker’s cottage, now uninhabited, sits to the southeast of the ancillary buildings. It has a mix of pantile and slate roofing and retains some small-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Later wall and coped ashlar gatepiers connect the cottage to the ancillary buildings.
The ancillary buildings were originally stabled and used as a carriage house for Newbigging House. Tall ashlar gatepiers adjoin a coped rubble wall enclosing the ancillary buildings. A brick stack located immediately west of the buildings marks the site of the Newbigging limestone quarry, previously owned by the Carron Company.
