Description
This is a late 18th to early 19th century group of buildings comprising a cottage and ancillary structures, originally serving as stables and a carriage house for Newbigging House. The buildings are constructed of rubble with a rough lime plaster finish ("harl"), with pantile roofs, some with slate eaves and ashlar skewbacks.
The main range has a north elevation featuring a recessed central section and irregular, projecting gabled end bays. The bay to the left has a stone forestair leading to a hayloft, while a lower range to the right includes a doorway and a wallhead stack. The outer right bay has a blocked opening at the level of the forestair. The south elevation shows a gable to the right, with a large opening and a doorway in a screen wall that fronts a catslide-roofed projection. A recessed later bay is situated to the left, featuring a pair of sliding timber doors. An eastern elevation includes a separate byre with a doorway on the left and a blocked opening to the right.
A small, single-storey farm worker's cottage, now uninhabited, is located to the southeast of the ancillary buildings, and has a mixture of pantile and slate roofing. Some small-pane glazing remains in timber sash and case windows. Later wall and coped ashlar gatepiers connect the cottage to the ancillary buildings.
Tall ashlar gatepiers mark the beginning of a coped rubble wall that encloses the ancillary buildings. The buildings are situated adjacent to a brick stack which is thought to mark the historical location of the Newbigging limestone quarry, previously owned by the Carron Company.
