Description

Circa 1920, Pettie Cottage is a single-story and attic, rectangular cottage that was originally part of the Humbie Children’s Village, built in 1906 in an Arts and Crafts style. The village, intended to provide holiday accommodation for children with disabilities, comprised individual cottages, a hall, and a school. It later served as a residential care facility, closing in the 1990s, before being redeveloped into private housing in 2008.

The cottage has a painted brick base course, harl (roughcast) plasterwork above, and a red tile roof. The west-facing elevation features a tripartite, lean-to loggia at the centre, with a segmental archway and a short flight of steps leading up to it. Windows are positioned on either side of the loggia, and a projecting, piend-roofed window extends to the outer left. A timber mullioned bipartite window is located in the attic. The east gable end includes a flat-roofed, modern porch and a fire escape. The side elevations have irregular window openings.

A plaque to the right of the doorway, under the loggia, states that Pettie Cottage was gifted by Miss Elizabeth Pettie of Edinburgh in 1920, specifically for children from the Canongate Parish in Edinburgh. The cottage forms part of a group of buildings, numbers 4-7, 9-14.
