Description

This is a single-story school building constructed in 1903 by J H Cooper. It was built in a Voyseyesque style, characterized by its rectangular plan. The exterior is harled (roughcast) and has a red tile roof. The north elevation has four bays, with a lower eaves line on the east end extending over a lean-to outbuilding and a small porch. The central bay features a tall, paired window that breaks the eaves with a coped wallhead, flanked by buttresses. Single windows sit under overhanging eaves on either side. The west gable has a timber mullioned paired window at ground level, with three small, square windows above. A large clock is positioned at the gablehead. A battered stack to the right is currently truncated, serving as a buttress. The south elevation incorporates a timber-framed craft room which projects from the main block and is covered by a catslide roof. A modern addition extends to the east end.

The school was funded by the St George's School Holiday Home Association and served as the first open-air residential school in Scotland. It is part of the former Humbie Children's Village, originally constructed in 1906 in an Arts and Crafts style. This village provided holiday accommodation for children with disabilities and consisted of cottages, a hall, and this school. It later operated as a residential care facility, closed in the 1990s, and was redeveloped into private housing in 2008. The statutory address is 13 Shillinhill, formerly "The School." It is part of a group listing including numbers 4-10, 12-14.
