Rose Cottage, Children's Village, Humbie

Rose Cottage is a single-storey and attic cottage with a later single-storey wing, built after 1906. It is part of the former Humbie Children's Village, constructed in 1906 in an Arts and Crafts style. The village originally provided holiday accommodation for children with disabilities, and later became a residential care facility before being redeveloped into private housing in 2008. The building’s west-facing elevation has three irregular bays, featuring a brick base course above which the walls are harled. The roof is covered in red tiles. A doorway is centrally positioned, with an oculus to the right, and a modern window to the right of that. A wide, gabled bay projects to the left, breaking the eaves and incorporating a piend-roofed canted window on the ground floor and a tripartite attic window above. A sympathetic single-storey addition extends to the south, and a flat-roofed porch addition is found in the re-entrant angle at the rear, created by the projecting gable. Rose Cottage is part of a group listing encompassing numbers 4-9 and 11-14.
