Description
This is a circa 1900 memorial drinking fountain, located within the former Humbie Children's Village. The fountain is comprised of a gabled shelter approximately 10 feet high, with harled walls and red-tiled skews. A round-arched panel is centrally positioned and inscribed with a dedication. It features a gadrooned and guilloched stone basin, from which the drinking spout has been removed, and a bronze medallion plaque depicting a girl's profile. The rear of the structure is blank. The fountain is dedicated to Marjory Charlotte Athanass Stewart, who was born on 10th April 1873 and died on 26th November 1898.
The Children's Village itself was built in 1906 in an Arts and Crafts style and provided holiday accommodation for children with disabilities. It later served as a residential care facility before closing in the 1990s and being redeveloped into private housing in 2008. The fountain is situated near number 4 Shillinghill.
