Description
The building is a village hall dating back to approximately 1923. It is a single-story, rectangular structure with later additions including a bell tower and extensions to the east side. The exterior is harled (roughcast) and has a red tile roof. The south elevation has five bays, with a square bell tower projecting from the centre, rising above the roofline. The bell tower’s entrance is below, with a rounded door surround, a memorial panel above and a cornice below a bellcote (small bell tower) with a shallow pyramidal roof. The bellcote has segmental arched openings on each face and a terracotta finial, with a bell still in place. Bipartite (two-light) bays with timber mullions flank the tower, each flanked by pilaster strips. A further doorway is located under a catslide (a low-sloping roof) on the west side, flanked by a window, and with an advanced bay similarly roofed to the outside to the left. Flat-roofed additions form the east side of the building.
A memorial panel commemorates Thomas Rouch of Walkerburn, Peeblesshire, and is dated 1923, suggesting he was the benefactor. The hall is part of the former Humbie Children's Village, which was constructed in 1906 in an Arts and Crafts style. The village was originally built to provide holiday accommodation for children with disabilities, comprising several cottages, a hall, and a school. It later became a residential care facility, closing in the 1990s and being redeveloped into private housing in 2008. The building currently serves as a dining hall for Algarde Home.
