Description
Humbie Cottage is a single-storey cottage, likely designed by J H Cooper after 1906, with later additions. It is constructed with harled walls and a red tile roof. The west-facing elevation has three bays: a doorway to the outer right, a casement window in the centre, and a gabled bay to the left with a window. A garage extension adjoins the north side, and a gabled wing projects from the south. Further additions have been made to the rear of the property. The main roof is piended, with a stack on one side.
The cottage is part of the former Humbie Children’s Village, built in 1906 in an Arts and Crafts style. The village was originally created to provide holiday accommodation for children with disabilities, comprising separate cottages, a hall, and a school. It operated as a residential care facility in the later 20th century, closed in the 1990s, and was subsequently redeveloped into private housing in 2008. The statutory address is 1 Shillinghill, formerly "The Cottage."
