Luffness Mill Cottages No. 2, Luffness Mill

These are early 19th century cottages, with a later 19th century addition, located to the west of the site of a former mill. They form an irregular group of cottages built of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings; the sides and rear are of rubble.

The single-storey range, to the east, is built of red sandstone. It is in a T-shape, with a three-bay cottage set at a right angle. A doorway is in the centre, with windows on either side. The gable facing north is blank, and a two-part window has been inserted into the south gable. A wing extends to the west. The south elevation of this wing has a central doorway, flanked to the left by a modern window; the window and door openings have been enlarged. The roof is covered with red pantiles, with a slate eaves course, crowstepped gables, and ashlar coped skews.

A two-storey block of two cottages adjoins the single-storey range to the west, built of cream sandstone. There are doors to the outer bays on the south elevation, and two windows per floor. Dormerheads with crowstepped gables break the eaves at the first floor. Later, less sympathetic dormerheads have been added to the rear. The roof is covered with purple slates and includes ashlar coped stacks; one ridge stack is rendered with some decorative cans.

The cottages are listed for their historical connection to the mill kiln. They appear on the 1854 Ordnance Survey map as buildings associated with a sawmill, of which only the detached circular kiln remains and is listed separately.
