Description
These early 19th century garden walls lie to the west of Luffness House and incorporate earlier fabric. They represent the remains of a picturesque landscape design, with irregular walls constructed from random rubble, punctuated by four gateways. Three of these gateways feature small pointed arches, one being framed with a tufa surround beneath a battlemented projection. Another gateway is within a heavy rubble arch, both gated with a wooden yett. A larger gateway is situated within a gabled bay, featuring ashlar buttressed jambs, broken at the apex with a projecting ledge, possibly originally intended for a fire basket or statue. A ha-ha separates the southern parkland from a woodland walk to the north, the latter leading to the remains of a Carmelite Friary (Scheduled Ancient Monument).
The formal landscape originally established in the 18th century appears to have been adapted to a more informal style in the early 19th century. The walls and gateways are located northwest of the Walled Garden, and together with the Gardener’s House, Dovecot, and Water Tower, contribute to the historic landscape setting.
