Description
This is a late 16th century beehive dovecot, situated within the grounds of Luffness House. The dovecot is 18 feet high and constructed of random rubble with ashlar courses. It is topped with a cornice featuring billet moulding. A doorway is located on the east side, and the domed roof has a central circular lantern with eight holes, designed for bird flight.
Inside, a central potence ladder provides access, and the walls are lined with 500 nesting boxes. Recent research, provided by the owner, suggests a possible earlier date of around 1420. The dovecot is a significant feature within the wider landscape and is grouped with the Gardener’s House, Water Tower, and Walled Garden.
