Description
Quarry House is a single-storey, L-plan house dating after 1854, originally a forge. The main facade faces north, accompanied by a rear wing extending to the north. It is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and hood moulds, with rubble to the sides and rear. The design features four bays, with a door positioned to the right of an advanced gabled bay containing a ground-floor window and a slip opening to the attic. There are two windows to the right of the doorway at ground level. The east gable end has a ground-floor window and a small attic light. A slightly recessed wing has a bipartite window to the left and a single window to the right, alongside a single window to the east gable end. Single-storey additions are present at the rear, and a modern attic extension has been added. Sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern are found throughout. The house has crowstepped gables, grey slates, and ashlar coped paired diamond stacks. A sundial, dated 1746 and featuring square and heart motifs, stands in the garden; it is made of ashlar and was remounted.
The building echoes the style of other properties on the Luffness Estate, including Aberlady Mains Cottages, Luffness Kennels, and Luffness Mains Cottages, which are individually listed. The house is located north of an old quarry and the remains of Luffness Convent, a 13th-century Carmelite Friary. It was apparently a smithy and is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1854.
