Description

The Walls and Walled Garden at Luffness House date to circa 1822 and represent a "jardin clos" style, situated to the west of Luffness House. The garden possesses an unusual diamond-shaped layout set within a square design, with the south wall of the square being missing. The walls are constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings; the long axis of the diamond runs east to west. The walls are topped with a penticed pantile coping, featuring four rows of tiles on a wooden frame supported by iron brackets, pitched to the north. A main entrance is located in a chamfered angle, framed by a broad panel of ashlar.

This garden is of French design and is reputedly unique in Britain. It is believed that Sir Alexander Hope employed French prisoners of war in its construction. The garden is notable as the location where the first apricots in Scotland were grown and remains densely planted and well maintained. To the north lies an old orchard area and a greenhouse with vines.

The garden forms an A-Group with the Luffness Water Tower, Luffness Garden Walls, Gardener’s House, and Dovecot.
