Description

This is a tall, square, three-stage water tower, likely designed by Thomas Brown in the earlier to mid-19th century, circa 1825. It is situated near Luffness House in East Lothian and is associated with the surrounding landscape and other estate buildings, including the dovecot, walled garden, walled garden walls, and gardener’s house.

The tower is constructed from random rubble with ashlar dressings and a cornice. Buttresses are present at each corner, mitred at the level of the first-floor window sills. An entrance is located on the south side, while the north, east, and west elevations feature spout openings in wall plaques positioned above stone drinking troughs at ground level. The upper stages have two tall slit windows on each elevation, which now function as flight holes for the dovecote. The tower currently lacks a roof.

Internally, remnants of the original winding equipment remain, although they are in poor condition. The tower originally possessed an arcaded parapet, which was removed in 1968. It is thought the tower was built near the location of a former Carmelite Monastery; it is speculated that it may have occupied the monastery's well and incorporated some of its masonry.
