Luffness Mill Cottages No. 1, Luffness Mill

These are early 19th century single-story cottages with a mid-to-late 19th century addition, forming an irregular group of cottages located to the west of the site of a former mill. They are built of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, rubble sides, and a rear of rubble.

The single-story range, facing east, is of red sandstone and has a T-plan, with a three-bay cottage set at a right angle to the east. It has a central door, windows flanking the door, and a blank gable to the north. A bipartite window has been inserted on the south side. A rear wing extends to the west. The west-facing elevation of the wing has a central door flanked to the left by a modern window, and the original openings have been enlarged. The roof is covered with red pantiles, with a slate eaves course, crowstepped gables, and ashlar coped skews.

Adjoining to the west is a two-story block of two cottages, built of cream sandstone. The south elevation has doors in the outer bays and two windows at ground level, with four windows at the first floor breaking the eaves in crowstepped gabled dormerheads. There are unfortunate modern dormerheads at the rear. The roof is covered with purple slates, with crowstepped gables and ashlar coped stacks. A ridge stack is rendered and includes some decorative cans.

The cottages are listed due to their connection to the mill kiln. They appear on the 1854 Ordnance Survey map as buildings associated with a sawmill, of which only the circular detached kiln survives and is listed separately.
