Description
The Luffness Mill House includes a detached circular kiln dating from the 1820s and 1830s. The kiln is constructed of random rubble, with walls approximately 10 feet high. It features an arched draw vent at ground level on the west side, now blocked, and a window opening situated close to the eaves on the east side. The interior walls taper down to the ground level. The roof is covered with polygonal pantiles, and a ventilator is now missing.
Originally used to dry timber for a sawmill, likely located to the south, as shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1854 and referenced in W Forrest’s map of Haddingtonshire from 1799. The kiln is currently in poor condition. It shares a similar form with the Seton Mill Kiln, located in the Tranent parish. The Luffness Mill Cottages to the west are listed separately.
