Description

This is a terrace of 10 single-storey, two-bay estate cottages, dating to around 1840. They are located on the High Street in Aberlady and were built as part of the Wemyss Estate. The terrace is in a Gothic style and includes a central pend. The end cottages project slightly at the rear, with a higher ridge line and a skew division visible.

The cottages are constructed of roughly squared and snecked red sandstone, with droved ashlar dressings featuring cavetto moulded reveals and an eaves course. Each cottage has two bays, with five Tudor-arched doorways flanking a similarly arched pend. Between each door is a pointed window. The windows are sash and case with pointed arches, and the upper sashes have a traceried pattern. The rear of the cottages is harled. The roofs are covered in red pantiles, with ashlar coped skews and 10 coped stacks.

The cottages were recently restored and are historically linked to 11 and 12 Main Street and The Wagon Inn, which are listed separately. An Ordnance Survey map from 1854 shows the terrace.
