Dovecot, East Fortune Farm

This is an 18th-century dovecote, located within the south wall of the former steading at East Fortune Farm. It is a lectern dovecote, so designed to allow light to the interior regardless of prevailing winds. The dovecote is constructed of random rubble, originally harled with dressings that were roughly shaped ("stugged") and pecked ("droved"). A doorway is situated on the north side, with an additional door set into what was originally a blind Venetian window above. A small window is present on the south side, with a blocked cart-arch below. The roof slopes down to the south, divided into two sections, and features a band course with six flight holes positioned across the middle. It has grey slate covering, with straight skews and three finials along the roof ridge. The interior contains square nesting boxes, which are still used by birds. The dovecote is situated south of the East Fortune Farmhouse, which is separately listed. This dovecote is referenced in "Buildings of Scotland: Lothian" by C McWilliam (1978), page 83.
