2 New Row, East Fortune Hospital

This is a row of six two-storey cottages built around 1882, likely alongside the main farm buildings at East Fortune Hospital (listed separately). The cottages are probably of group value and were designed to complement the hospital complex. They are constructed of squared and coursed stugged ashlar, exhibiting Jacobethan detailing, including hoodmoulds above the ground-floor openings. Each cottage has three bays, with a central pend (a passageway) running through. The ground floor features three-pane strip fanlights above off-centre doors, flanked by windows. Smaller windows are set within gabled dormerheads that break the eaves at the first floor level; a continuous eaves gutter runs along the roofline. The rear of the cottages is harled, and there are some minor later additions.

The windows are sash and case, with plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slates with straight skews and beak skewputts (decorative projections from the roof). Ashlar coped gable end and ridge stacks are present, with paired stacks above the pend. A low rubble retaining wall defines the front garden. The statutory address is 1-6 New Row, East Fortune.
