1 New Row, East Fortune Hospital

This is a row of six two-storey cottages, built around 1882. They are likely contemporary with the nearby steading at East Fortune Hospital, which is listed separately. The cottages are characterised by their uneven three-bay arrangement and a central pend (archway). They are constructed of squared and coursed stugged ashlar with Jacobethan detailing, notably hoodmoulds over the ground floor openings. The ground floor features three-pane strip fanlights above off-centre doors, with windows on either side. Smaller windows in gabled dormerheads break the eaves at the first floor level, and a continuous eaves gutter runs along the length of the building. The rear of the cottages is harled, and there have been some minor additions.

The windows are sash and case, with plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slates with straight skews and beak skewputts. Ashlar coped gable end and ridge stacks are present, with a paired stack over the pend. A low retaining wall made of rubble defines the front garden.
