Description
Dated 1768, East Fortune House is a two-storey, three-bay farmhouse with a cellar, and a later wing and porch to the east, situated on a natural terrace. The farmhouse is harled, with ashlar dressings, a base course, and an eaves course punctuated by four wooden blocks, likely the ends of principal rafters. Rusticated quoins are also visible.
The south elevation features a doorway at the centre, with a dated keystone, a surround in a style reminiscent of Gibbs, and a diamond-paned fanlight above. Sash and case windows flank the door at ground level, with three windows above on the first floor. To the right, a lower, recessed two-storey, two-bay wing adjoins, featuring a modern gabled porch and a panelled door with a glazed surround. A bipartite window is visible to the right, with a further single window at ground level, and two windows on the first floor. The north elevation displays irregular openings, including a centrally located doorway that has been altered to give access to the cellar stair. A harled, lean-to outhouse addition is attached to the wing.
The west gable wall has two windows at ground level and one window to the right on the first floor. Sash and case windows are predominant, with a pattern of 12 panes for much of the glazing, although some plate glass is found at the rear. Grey slates cover the roof, with straight skews. Harled stacks are present, those on the main house featuring ashlar dressings and decorative cans.
Inside, the property retains a half-round stair leading to a vaulted cellar.
To the east, the property is marked by rubble drum-piers, while to the west, red sandstone polygonal piers support coped garden walls. Remains of an 18th century steading are found within the garden to the south, indicated by a low row of drum-piers likely representing former cartsheds. A lectern dovecote survives intact and is listed separately. A new steading, built in 1822, lies to the southeast; it is also listed separately and now has separate ownership.
