Description
This is a large retail store building located at 21 and 21A North High Street in Musselburgh, dated 1903. It features a freestyle architectural style, is two storeys tall with attics, and has a near-symmetrical facade that is seven bays wide. The structure is supported by five channelled and panelled piers, with slender panelled pilasters in between, which hold up an entablature over the shop front.
An off-centre doorpiece, flanked by two piers, features an open curvilinear pediment on brackets with an acroterion, providing access to the upper floors. The advanced central bay on the first floor has a triple window with stilted segmental heads on panelled pilasters, panelled aprons, and a palmette frieze, topped by a high scrolled pediment that contains a plaque beneath a small broken pediment.
The end bays are highlighted by canted four-light oriel windows with panelled aprons, which are corbelled to a square under Dutch gables that contain oculi. The intermediate bays on each side feature one bipartite window and one single architraved window, both situated under a decorated frieze and cornice. All window cills are linked by a string course. Above the cornice and flanking the central bay are crow-stepped tympan chimneys, supported by consoles and incorporating windows on each side of the chimney (with the left-hand chimneyhead removed). The building is constructed of red ashlar with slate roofs and red ridge tiles.
