Description

This building at 103-107 English Street in Dumfries dates from the late 19th century and features three storeys with attics and shops on the ground floor. It has six bays, with doors located in the first and fourth bays. The façade is divided above the ground floor by plain pilaster strips, and the easternmost bay rises an additional storey, forming a square turret topped with a truncated steep pyramidal roof that has iron brattishing.

The structure is made of red ashlar, which is painted at the ground level. The shop fronts are framed by pilasters with foliated capitals, and the openings are stilted, with segmental arches above the doors and flat arches over the windows, although the left side is obscured by a modern fascia. All windows are set within recessed panels between piers, featuring moulded reveals and are mostly square-headed. The first-floor windows have incised tympana below segmental arches, and there is a small bipartite window under a segmental arch in the turret.

The building has plate-glass sash windows, with string courses at the cill levels and decorative blocking at the eaves. It includes two piended dormers, skews, end stacks, and slate roofs. The single-bay east return elevation is similarly detailed.
