104 English Street, Dumfries

This building, located at 104 English Street in Dumfries, dates from around 1870 and is designed in the Scottish Baronial style. It is a three-storey structure featuring a crow-stepped and asymmetrically gabled bay that faces east. The shop entrance is situated in the canted northeast angle, which is topped by a conical-roofed bartizan. The facade along English Street has two bays, one of which is crow-stepped, while the Shakespeare Street side has three plain bays that include bipartite windows and dormer heads. The exterior is constructed from stugged and snecked red ashlar with polished dressings. The principal openings on the ground floor are roll-moulded and have shouldered heads, including the shop windows. The door leading to the upper floors is centrally located on the English Street elevation. Above this, the first floor features corniced windows, corbel tables, and strings that divide the floors. The building is topped with coped stacks and has a slate roof.
