Description
116 English Street in Dumfries is a building dating from around 1870, consisting of two adjoining two-storey blocks, each roughly three bays wide. Each block features two central doors, with smaller doors leading to shops; one of these doors is now blocked, while the other (at No 114) has been altered to include glazing, along with a modified shop front. The exterior is finished in polished red ashlar with decorative architraves. The block at No 118 includes a consoled balcony above the door. Most openings are segmental-arched, with plate glass sash windows; the outer bays have bipartite windows. There are string courses dividing the floors, angle pilaster strips, decorative eaves moulding, straight skews, and end stacks, all topped by a slate roof.
