Description
The Dumfries County Buildings, located at 113 English Street in Dumfries, were designed by Peddie and Forbes Smith and constructed between 1912 and 1914. This large and symmetrical U-plan building is an example of Edwardian Renaissance architecture. It features red ashlar stone, which is channelled at the ground level.
The central range of the building has a prominent raised centerpiece that includes a consoled and pedimented doorpiece. Above this, there is an arched three-light window with Doric-columned mullions, flanked by channelled pilaster strips. The wings of the building are five bays deep and echo the design of the central pavilion, though they do not have doors. The structure is topped with balustraded wall-head parapets and first-floor aprons, and it has piended and plaformed roofs, with attic windows concealed by the parapets. The windows are small-paned sashes.
At the rear of the building, there is a council chamber that features pedimented doorpieces and columned screens.
