Description
Dumfries County Buildings is a large villa built in the later 19th century, featuring a roughly square plan with a service wing to the northwest. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced snecked red ashlar with quoins, polished dressings, and moulded or chamfered reveals. Most windows are mullioned, with segmental heads on the ground floor and shouldered heads on the first floor. The southeast and southwest elevations each have three bays, with bipartite windows in the inner bays and stone-bracketed balconies connecting the canted full-height outer bays, which are corbelled to a square shape at the first floor.
A long, narrow porch at the northwest is balustraded and has six shouldered-headed lights, with a second door on the northwest wall next to the service wing. There is a string course between the floors and at the first-floor cill level, along with a bracketed cornice. The building features corniced stacks and piended slate roofs.
Inside, the principal rooms showcase elaborate cornice and ceiling plasterwork, a carved timber stair, and some fireproof partitions.
