Description

Normanie is a large villa built in the late 19th century, located on a terraced site facing east in Jedburgh. The building features cream bull-faced squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and cills, along with a base course.

The east elevation has three bays, with a tripartite doorway at the center that includes a deep-set panelled door and a rectangular fanlight, flanked by narrow windows. Above the doorway is a window. To the right, there is a large canted bay at ground level, which has a bipartite window at the front and is flanked by single windows, all topped by a single cornice and a solid parapet. A bipartite window is located above this bay. To the left, there is a tripartite window at ground level and a bipartite window above. Extending from the canted window to the south corner and along the south front is a tiled verandah, featuring an ashlar plinth topped with decorative cast-iron railings and five columns with decorative brackets that support a glazed lean-to roof.

The south elevation has three bays, with a blank single-storey wall of an outhouse at the far left. To the right, there is a lower bay with two windows at ground level and a single window above that breaks the eaves with a piend-roofed dormer head. There are two full-height bays to the right, with a wallhead stack between them; the left bay has bipartite windows, while the right has single windows. The verandah continues beyond the wallhead stack. The north elevation features two bays, with a canted window to the left and a bipartite window above it. The west elevation, or rear, has a three-bay stepped rubble appearance, with the left bay set back, a central bay that includes a back door and a second-floor dormer that breaks the eaves, and an advanced right bay that is a single-storey piend-roofed outhouse.

The villa has plate glass timber sash and case windows, a grey slate piend and platform roof with heavy moulded timber eaves, and stacks that feature string courses and an ashlar cornice. The building is equipped with cast-iron rainwater heads and downpipes, which have decorative brackets.

Inside, there is a large hall with a tiled floor and a columned arcade across the stairway. The oak stair features barleytwist balusters, and there is a similar arcade above leading to a square top-lit landing. The front rooms are adorned with Godwinesque fireplaces.

The property also includes a bull-faced sandstone terrace wall and a solid balustrade leading to the stairs on the east side of the house.
