Description
11 Exchange Street in Jedburgh is a commercial building designed by James Pearson Alison in 1899. It is a symmetrical two-storey structure with an attic and three bays, featuring Renaissance details made of polished cream ashlar and a glazed curtain wall.
On the southwest elevation, the ground and first floors are separated by four giant chamfered piers on pedestals. There is a base course at the ground level, a moulded fascia between the floors, and an entablature with a deep caveto strapworked frieze. The central bay has a porthouse that is overlaid on the strapwork, and a solid parapet sits above. Each pier has an escutcheon that reads in sequence: "ESTABLISHED ANNO 1866," "STRENU ET PROSPERE," and "ERECTED ANNO 1900," supported by small scrolled consoles flanking the shop fascia at the ground level. The bays are filled with plate glass windows in timber frames, which are divided vertically into three sections; however, the ground floor windows have been altered.
The attic features three identical gableheads with dentilled eaves and zinc coping, separated by inverted scrolled consoles resting on the parapet dies. Each gablehead contains a lunette with a roll-moulded architrave and keystone. The building has 8-pane timber glazing with casement windows, and the rubble stacks are faced with ashlar and topped with coping. The roof is covered with grey slates.
The interior was unseen in 1992 but is evidently much altered.
