Description

Froylehurst is a two-storey, three-bay square villa built in 1894 by James Pearson Alison, located on a terraced site facing east in Jedburgh. The main facades are constructed of cream bull-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring windows with chamfered arrises, tabs, and elaborately carved lintels. The secondary facades are made of squared and snecked rubble with polished margin drafts.

The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical and includes a corniced and pilastered doorway with a deep-set door and a rectangular fanlight at the center, along with a single window above. This is flanked by canted windows at the ground level, which have cornices and blocking courses, and bipartite windows above. To the left is the side of a conservatory.

The north elevation, facing the drive, has three bays with a single window to the left and a wallhead stack to the right. The center features a small single window at ground level, with a stair window that has a stone mullion and transom above. To the right are three small windows at ground level.

The south elevation also has three bays and includes the original lean-to for the conservatory, built across the right bay on a sandstone and brick plinth, with a decorative cast-iron snow guard at the eaves.

The west elevation is irregular and features a piend-roofed back porch to the left, with an entrance to the scullery on the right. The primary elevations have timber sash and case plate glass windows, with stained glass in the stair window, while the secondary elevations have four-pane windows. The roof is piended with timber eaves, and the chimney stacks are coped with bull-faced sandstone. The roof is covered in grey slates, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods, some of which have been replaced with plastic.

Inside, the villa retains almost all of its original features, having undergone sensitive redecoration. It boasts high-quality stained and varnished pine woodwork throughout, original fireplaces—some of which are of high quality—in all rooms, moulded cornices, and bathroom fittings. The inner hall features a decorative tiled floor and a screen door with etched glass.
