Description
West Fortune is a mid- to late 19th-century farmhouse with Jacobean detailing. The farmhouse is constructed of squared and snecked grey sandstone with ashlar dressings, an eaves course, and chamfered reveals.
The south elevation is in an L-plan shape, consisting of a single-bay wing projecting to the west and adjoining a two-bay east range. A shallow gabled porch is positioned at the entrance, set at an angle to the left of the east range, and includes a modern glazed addition. A single window is located to the right at ground level, and two windows are positioned at the first floor, breaking the eaves within gabled dormerheads featuring blank shields. A broad gable end faces west, containing a window on each floor.
The east elevation features a broad single bay to the left, adjoining a slightly recessed lower single-storey and attic wing to the right. A canted tripartite window is present on both the ground and first floors of the gable, incorporating stone mullions, a cornice, and a blocking course. Two windows are visible at ground level on the wing.
The west elevation’s L-plan shape has a single-bay gable advanced to the left, with a window on both the ground and first floors, adjoining a single-bay block of the house, with a window to each floor, and a small light at the first floor left.
The north elevation shows a rear entrance located within the central wing, with a lean-to greenhouse addition present.
The windows are sash and case, with a 12-pane glazing pattern; the outer lights of the tripartite windows have 4 panes.
The roof is covered in grey slates with crowstepped gables and straight skew dormers. Corbelled and coped diamond ashlar stacks are present at the gableheads, and a group of four stacks are at the central ridge. Ashlar coped retaining walls and gate piers are also visible.
The farmhouse may incorporate elements of earlier fabric. The statutory address is West Fortune Farmhouse.
