Walled Garden, Retreat House, Dunbar

The stables at the Retreat House in Dunbar date back to the early 19th century and are designed as a two-storey, three-bay classical structure. The building features coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings, a base course, and angle pilasters. The east elevation is harled. It includes an Ionic doorpiece with an arched doorway, a panelled door, and a decorative fanlight. A flight of steps leads up to the entrance, which is flanked by cast-iron railings. The windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern on the east and west sides, with some blind sash windows. There is a tall central stair window at the rear, and the building has end stacks and a piended slate roof.

Inside, the stables feature full window shutters, panelled doors, and decorative plasterwork. To the south, there is a stable with a loft and additional outbuildings, constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. A walled garden is located to the south of these structures, enclosed by a rubble wall that continues with the boundary wall and adjoins the east gable of the house. The garden has a curved entrance gateway.
