Description
The Priory, located on Abbeylands, High Street in Dunbar, is a building designed by J Jerdan and Son in 1910. It is a two-storey rectangular block with a single-storey extension to the north. The structure is made of squared, coursed sandstone rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and a cill course on the ground floor entrance facade. The roof is covered with Westmoreland slates and has piended sections, broken by gables, with end stacks and roof stacks extending from below the ridge to the west.
The entrance elevation features an advanced stair block with a mullion and transom multi-light window, topped by a wave-coped ashlar parapet. Flanking gables break the eaves and have scrolled pedimental heads above the first-floor windows. There is a balustraded porch in the re-entrant angle to the north of the stair block, which includes a bolection moulded architrave and panelled double doors with upper glazed panels. The windows are multi-pane sashes, arranged in a symmetrical pattern of two or three lights.
The rear west elevation of the main three-bay block has gabled end sections with full-height canted bays. Above the central first-floor window, there is a pediment panel, with a dormer situated behind the parapet. Small arched windows are present in the gable heads. The ground floor canted bays on the south face have slate roofs, and the chimney features a wallhead gable with scroll decoration. Additionally, there is a buttressed terrace wall that was added in 1913 by J Jerdan and Son.
Inside, the hall is adorned with mahogany panelling and features a convex fireplace bay with a tiled surround, timber ceiling beams, and a staircase with light bannisters. The dining room includes built-in cabinets, and there is a broad low timber arch and arched passage in the hall, complemented by decorative plaster cornices.
